The Great Grill Off returns!

We’re thrilled to share that the Great Grill Off returns to the Christian Children’s Home of Ohio campus in Wooster on Sunday, June 13, 12:30-3:30pm. The competition for best burger continues at our 9th annual event. Community grill teams will attempt to win over your tastebuds and your vote with scrumptious slider creations. As the event gets closer, we’ll reveal the teams and their recipes.

We’re keeping your health in mind by spacing out food lines and eating areas. Limited seating will be available so feel free to bring your own blankets and/or lawn chairs. We’re also changing up some of our children’s activities to bring you the most fun in a safe way.

The Great Grill Off is a free community event for the whole family. Donations of any size at the gate are always appreciated. Your support helps a child feel safe, often for the very first time, and receive trauma care in our children’s residential center.

We’re excited to see all of you as a guest or considering serving as an event volunteer.

Full hearts and bellies!

We had a beautiful June day for our 2019 Great Grill Off. We warmly welcomed 11 community grill teams and nearly 1400 guests of all ages to the Wooster Campus of Christian Children’s Home of Ohio for amazing food and family fun! We know you came hungry as more than 5,000 burgers and 300 hot dogs were served along with your favorite picnic sides. Thank you to Frito Lay who once again donated chips and to Hartzler’s Family Dairy who contributed 24 gallons of ice cream to make the day extra sweet.

We saw smiles across the campus as friends and family enjoyed a host of carnival games, inflatables, face painting and tractor rides. Many of you took home winning desserts through our Bake Walk. In our inaugural basketball shootout, 69 shots were taken at 3/4 court resulting in three winners.

Congratulations to all of our winners… including Spoon Market who you voted Best Burger for a third consecutive year with their Kung Fu Panda Burger. Your second favorite burger was the Too Gouda Be True Burger grilled by West View Healthy Living. Third place winner was Buehler’s with their Luau Burger. The competition was filled with laughter and loyalty for their amazing creations. And it was delicious!

Our day was a huge success with the support of our generous sponsors and dedicated volunteers who helped us throughout the weekend. Thank you for your kindness and leadership. Your support allowed us to help others experience their worth in Christ during our 50th celebration weekend.

Enjoy the photo gallery for a taste of the Grill Off and make plans to join us in June 2020 for our eighth annual competition!

Are you hungry yet?

The 2019 competition is really heating up between our 11 community grill teams. This year we are seeing a mix of hot and spicy creations as well as dangerous amounts of cheese 🙂 Will Spoon Market hold on to their undefeated status, or will a new team steal it away? Your vote could determine the 2019 Best Burger.

Get a sneak peek below, and be sure to bring the whole family and all of your friends out for our seventh annual event! Admission is free; your generous donation at the gate helps kids and families experience their worth perhaps for the first time!

This year’s Great Grill Off is 50 times more special

Our Seventh Annual Great Grill Off takes place during our 50th anniversary year! As we gear up for this summer favorite event (now just five weeks away), we invite you to learn more about the roots of our organization.

When CCHO opened in 1969, the vision of our founders was both simple and profound: a place where kids and God could meet. We are grateful that their vision has not only been fulfilled, but that it’s grown into our purpose of helping children, adults and families experience their worth in Christ.

In those 50 years, CCHO has expanded in so many ways. We now have four residential cottages on our campus housing as many as 36 kids at a time; we’ve developed a variety of therapeutic approaches to meet the mental, emotional, physical, recreational and spiritual needs of each of our young residents; we offer equine-assisted therapy from One Heart Stables on our Wooster campus; and today, our family of ministries includes Encompass Christian Counseling and Encourage Foster Care.

To commemorate our 50th anniversary, we will be sharing stories of the lives that have been forever changed by the work God has done through our family of ministries. Peruse the first nine stories here and check back throughout the year for more stories from this series.

We look forward to sharing this special anniversary with you on Sunday, June 9! So gather friends and family to taste delicious sliders and picnic classics and enjoy a host of family activities at our Seventh Annual Great Grill Off!

The largest Great Grill Off ever!

WOW. That’s about all we can say about the 2018 Great Grill Off! We weren’t sure how the rain would affect attendance but God provided the perfect window, and our grill teams responded with a lineup of delicious sliders that rivaled any past Grill Off menu. A record 1200-plus people came out to the Wooster campus of Christian Children’s Home of Ohio and, by the end of the day, we had served more than 2700 burgers and another 448 hot dogs, along with gallons of baked beans, potato salad and macaroni salad. Frito-Lay once again provided tons of chips and let’s not forget the 24 gallons of Hartzler’s Family Dairy ice cream. But the Grill Off is about more than just food. This event is one of the highlights of the summer for families looking for a fun day outside with tons of carnival games, face painting and inflatables.

Check out the infographic for all the great stats from the day. CCHO and our family of ministries would once again like to thank everyone who came despite the sketchy weather reports. We had more than 500 votes in our annual burger contest, with Wooster’s own Spoon Market successfully defending their crown with the awesome Hercules burger, which was no small feat considering the yummy entries from our other community teams (Lone Star Butcher and Deli Shop, Gouda Bar & Grill, and The Pines) and our four CCHO campus teams. A day like this would not be possible without our incredible volunteers, who once again stepped up to make this day unforgettable for all who attended, and special thanks to our generous event sponsors!

Only one of these burgers can win?!

There is one clear theme for this year’s burger teams: bacon. Not that every burger at this year’s Great Grill Off will feature the most delicious of the cured meats, but as you can see below, many of them do. And we ain’t complainin’!

There are, of course, a whole bunch of bacon-less burgers to choose from, and each of them sounds as delicious as the last. Which is to say: Good luck choosing which of these three you’re going to taste this coming Sunday, June 10 from 12:30 – 3:30, let alone which one will ultimately get your vote for the day’s best burger and take home this awesome trophy! Do you prefer your burgers with BBQ sauce, chipotle mayo or just the standard condiments? How about some real maple syrup? American cheese, feta, fried mozzarella, or gouda mac & cheese?

Wooster’s own and 2017 champion Spoon Market & Deli returns to the Great Grill Off with a new burger, the Hercules, and the competition promises to be fierce. Will one of the other community and CCHO teams take the crown from Spoon? Your vote will help decide.

Get a sneak peek below, and be sure to bring the whole family and all of your friends out for this FREE event!

Burger teams shine at the 2017 Great Grill Off

Great Grill Off attendees have been treated to some delicious food on Christian Children’s Home of Ohio campus for years, but our 2017 grill teams took it to a whole new level this summer! Highlighted by burgers from a host of new community teams and CCHO campus entries, this year’s Great Grill Off menu will be tough to beat next summer.

Of course, the food was just part of the fun, as families had a great time on the bounce houses, miniature horse rides and tractor ride, and the kids couldn’t get enough of the carnival games and face painting! In total, nearly 1,100 people joined us on our Wooster campus this year, and we served almost 3,500 total Certified Angus Beef burgers and another 348 frankfurters along with 18 gallons of Hartzler’s Family Dairy ice cream! Check out this infographic for a look at some of the stats from the day.

It was another great day for CCHO and its family of ministries, and we’d like to thank everyone who came out to enjoy the beautiful weather, grab a few burgers and support our work. And congratulations to Wooster’s own Spoon Market, whose Little Rascals burger received the most votes in our burger contest. Thank you to all of our burger teams (Lone Star Butcher and Deli Shop, Buckeye Nutrition, Bishop’s, Wooster Hope Center, Smoke the Burger Joint and our four campus teams) as well as our incredible event sponsors!
